The steps

How an evaluation works

Six steps, in order. You know what comes next at every point.

  1. 01
    Two working days

    Step 1: First message

You write a few lines in general terms. I reply within two working days and we choose a time for the interview.

  2. 02
    60 minutes

    Step 2: Interview

60 minutes. Your history, school, work, relationships and health, and what made you ask the question now. Questionnaires come beforehand.

  3. 03
    About 4 hours

    Step 3: Testing day

About four hours with breaks. Attention, memory, reasoning and speed tasks at a table, and a structured talk about daily life.

  4. 04
    Most of the wait

    Step 4: Scoring and writing

I score the tests, set them beside your history and the forms from people who know you, and write the report.

  5. 05
    About 3 weeks

    Step 5: Written report

About three weeks after testing day. Plain language, for you first. You decide who gets a copy.

  6. 06
    60 minutes

    Step 6: Feedback visit

60 minutes. We read the report together, what it says and does not say, and what to do next.

What gets looked at

What an evaluation looks at

No one test decides it. The report weighs all of these together.

  • Attention and memory

How you sustain focus, hold information in mind and switch between tasks.

  • Reasoning and speed

How you solve new problems and how quickly you work through routine ones.

  • Your history

School, work, family and the years before you can remember, from you and from people who knew you.

  • Communication and daily life

How you talk, read other people, handle noise, change and routine.

  • Other explanations

Anxiety, low mood, sleep and health conditions can look like ADHD or autism. I look at them before I conclude.

  • What helps

Every report ends with suggestions for you and, if you wish, for your doctor.

The line

An evaluation is not therapy

An evaluation answers a question and ends with a report. It is not treatment, and it does not replace therapy.

  • An evaluation

A set number of visits, a written report, and an answer to a question about how you think and work.

  • Therapy

Ongoing sessions to work on something with a therapist. I do not offer it, and I help you find someone who does.
